Apply the three phases of close reading when viewing a visual text. Whether “reading” a photograph, a picture book illustration, a political cartoon, an infographic, or a video, prompt students to:

UNDERSTAND the overall message and main idea.
INTERPRET the "author's" perspective based on how he created the visual text.
EVALUATE the effectiveness of the message.

The front side of the three vertical signs each include the relevant close reading icon and key questions. The backside of each sign includes additional questions the teacher may ask during that phase of close reading.

Physical set includes one of each 6" x 11" sign printed on glossy card stock and three 12-inch wooden sticks.
